So I've finally hit the point where ice bags just aren't cutting it anymore, too much hassle, too inconsistent. I've got a 100 gallon tank and I'm seriously considering pairing it with the Penguin 1/2 HP high-efficiency chiller. On paper, it looks like it should handle the load without breaking a sweat (no pun intended), but before I go ahead, I'd love to hear from anyone who's actually running this setup or something similar. Can it keep temps in the low 40s (or even 30s) without working itself to death? And how loud is it, really? this thing's going right outside my bedroom window, so I'm hoping it's more hum than howl. Any insight, advice, or "don't make the same mistake I did" stories are more than welcome.thanks

I think it should be able to handle your 100-gallon tank just fine and keep temps in the low 40s without breaking a sweat (no pun intended), lol. Especially if it's the high efficiency model. As for noise, its generally a bit on the louder side, but it should be more of a hum than a big howl. Just make sure it's placed distant or soundproofing if its right outside your bedroom.

A friend of mine has a similar setup with a lsightly larger tank, 100 and something gallons with the Penguin chiller and he says it does a good job. I wouldn't call it loud like annoyingly, but it's a noticeable sound for sure.
